UEFA breaks silence on Man United’s penalty goal against PSG, speaks on VAR

UEFA on Friday explained why Manchester United’s controversial penalty in their Champions League round of 16 second-leg clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night was the right decision.

The European football governing body took to their official website to release a statement detailing why referee Damir Skomina awarded the penalty during Man United’s clash with PSG.

Marcus Rashford’s spot-kick saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men eliminate the Ligue 1 champions from the Champions League.

United, who lost 2-0 at home in the first leg, won 3-1 on the night to progress on away goals.

With the match looking to end 2-1, referee Damir Skomina adjudged Presnel Kimpembe to have handled the ball in the area, after consulting Video Assistant Referees (VAR).

But UEFA insisted that the use of VAR and Skomina’s decision to award a penalty in the Parc des Princes, was the correct interpretation of the law.

Wenger has told his friends, that he is ready to take up the post, after deciding not to return to club management.

The 69-year-old could be confirmed in the role as early as this month.

In a recent interview with BeIN Sports, the Frenchman admitted that he still harbours an ambition of managing a team at the next World Cup.

“I could see myself working for a team.

“I must say I always wanted to go to the World Cup because I felt it is the job of a manager to be where the best football players in the world play football.

Manchester City goalkeeper, Ederson, has insisted that Liverpool’s Alisson is “one step ahead” of him and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

According to him, Alisson was great in the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp’s side last season, adding that his fellow country teammate won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the Copa America.

Ederson, Alisson and Ter Stegen were included in the final three-man shortlist for this year’s FIFA Best Men Goalkeeper award earlier this week.

“I think the three of us were the best, but I see Alisson one step ahead,” Ederson was quoted by Goal as saying.

Messi has a contract at Camp Nou until 2021, but it has been revealed there’s a clause which allows him to leave at the end of each season if he so wishes.

“He’s earned the right to be able to choose what he does with his future after everything he’s given the club,” Pique told Cadena Ser.
